In the state of New Jersey, it is the law to remove all ice and snow on your vehicle before driving. Winter Driving Tips 

• Drive slow and adjust your speed to the changing road conditions.
• Turn on your headlights and use low beams when traveling through the snow.
• Increase your traveling distance in case of ice. You should be traveling 10 seconds behind the car in front of you.
• Give snow plows plenty of room to work. Don’t tailgate them and do not try to pass. If you do pass, be extremely cautious as the operator’s field of vision is restricted.
• If you happen to skid, don’t break or accelerate. Remove your foot from the gas and gently steer your vehicle in the direction of the skid.
• Slow down before exiting the highway. Ramps are more likely to have icy patches.
• Have a personal safety kit in your vehicle that includes: an ice scraper, jumper cables or battery starter, blanket, sand or salt, lock deicer, flashlight, new batteries, and safety flares/ warning devices.
• If your vehicle becomes disabled, pull off the road as far as possible and turn on your emergency flashers. Remain with your vehicle until help arrives. If you can’t get your vehicle off the road, do not stand next to it or behind it. Proceed to a safe area away from traffic.
• Foggy weather can create dangerous driving conditions. If fog is involved, slow down, use fog lights or low-beam lights, and pay extra attention to the lights of other vehicles.
• Pay extra attention to potential wildlife. In winter, wild animals may be attracted to roads or human establishments in search of food. This can lead to a higher risk of a collision with an animal.
